There are phrases a candidate could use in the MUET speaking test to instantly elevate the part 1 speaking test presentation. In this blog I will list the pharses that prove to be very useful for use in MUET speaking part 1.
The main purpose of the MUET speaking test is to assess the candidate’s ability to speak in English. And as this is a test of English language proficiency you would want to sound proficient when speaking during the test.
A candidate could achieve this by making their presentation flow smoothly and by speaking in a clear way.
Examiners during the test will determine how well a candidate presentation is by assessing several criteria. They will be determining on whether the candidate:
- has correctly answered the question
- could speak in a clear way
- is able to gain the listeners' interest
- could present ideas in an organised way
I often notice that candidates who are able to gain higher marks for the speaking test are those who have certain capabilities. These candidates when presenting both for part 1 and part 2 would sound calm and relaxed. It seems like speaking in English comes naturally to them.
If this is the common criteria that is seen from candidates who do well in the MUET speaking test then it is wise therefore to learn how to do this for yourself. Try and ensure that you will be doing the same thing during your session.
One of the things that I see a candidate does to sound natural and relaxed when speaking in English is the fact that they would be using certain phrases during their speech. These are phrases that would help them move from one point to another, reinstating the points that they have given and also use certain expressions during the starting and ending of their sentences.
It is therefore advisable that candidates who are sitting for the speaking test to know these phrases, understand them, memorise them and later use them during the speaking test.
Here are the situations and some useful expressions to use during MUET speaking part 1:
1. Phrases when greeting the examiners and the other candidates
The MUET speaking test will involve 2 examiners and 4 candidates in a session. As one of the candidates there, you will be greeting the examiners and all the candidates as you present part 1. You can start your presentation by using these expressions.
Expressions to use for greetings:
- Good morning to the examiners and fellow candidates
- Hello everyone
- Hello there and a very good morning I bid to all
2. Phrases to introduce the topic and your task
After the greetings, introduce the situation and your task. This is all you need for the introduction of your presentation in part one. I noticed that some candidates tend to introduce themselves by stating their names and whether they are candidates A, B, C or D. I would advise you not to do this.
This is because the examiners would have already known which candidates you are. And stating all these would be a waste of time as you should be using the 2 minutes you have to fulfil your task which is to answer the question and successfully present your points regarding the topic.
So simply state the situation and your task.
Expressions for introducing the situation and your task:
- There are(state the situation) and I believe that (rephrase your task)
