Part 1 of the MUET speaking test is an individual presentation. For this part, each candidate will get a different question. You will have two minutes to prepare for this presentation. After this, each candidate will present their ideas individually for two minutes.

In this blog, I will show you the sample questions for part 1 of the MUET speaking test. There will be four different questions for each candidate A, B, C and D. This will be followed by sample answers for each  question. These sample answers are what examiners will expect to hear from you before placing you in the higher band in MUET.

I would like to point out also that there is a certain way of answering and presenting your respone in the test. Read my blog that I have written on how to present your ideas during the test correctly.

Topic for this sample question

The topic we are going to focus on in this blog is on the ways to achieve happiness. For the test, each candidate will get the same situation in their questions. The situation introduces the topic that candidates will be talking about. Each candidate, then will get the task of talking about one of the ways to achieve happiness. Read my blog on how to get your response ready during the MUET speaking test. It will give you a clearer idea of what to do during the test.

The task for each candidate:

Candidate A: having a positive view in life

Candidate, B: having a healthy body

Candidate C: having relationships with other people

Candidate, D: having a plan to develop ourselves

Sample answer for candidate A:

Good morning to the examiners and fellow candidates. There are many ways of achieving happiness. In my opinion, one of the ways is to have a positive view in life.

What is the meaning of having a positive view in life? Having a positive view in life does not mean that we will never ever feel bad in our lives. For sure we will feel down or sad sometimes. These feelings are only natural as we are only human. But having a positive view in life is when we can see something good in everything that happens. We always believe that every cloud has a silver lining. We will always try to be positive and remain positive in every ups and downs in life.

Being positive in life will also result in us net getting demotivated even when we face failures. When faced with dire situations even, we will get up, brush the dust off us and continue on.

In other words, staying positive, and having a positive view in life is vital. This is as we will always face difficult situations as we go about our day to day life. This is such as losing a pet or not getting to enter the course that we want. Having a positive outlook in life will allow us to see that there is always something good in what has happened to us.

This is, of course, easier said than done. But we should all try to have a positive view in our lives. Ultimately, this will lead to us always staying positive and therefore achieving happiness.

There are certain steps that we need to take to ensure that we have a positive view in life. One of the steps is for us to remain optimistic. When we are generally optimistic, we will be able to have a positive attitude that will allow us to view the setbacks in our lives as only something that is temporary. We believe that something better will come up in the future. And most importantly we will view the challenges that we face as opportunities for us to grow and become a better person.

 Another way achieving a positive view in life is by taking our negative experiences and reframing them. We reframe these negative situations to be able to see the positive aspects of the situation. I would say that staying positive is even more important for us youths. This is because we still in the precess of adjusting ourselves into adulthood. And so we would surely make lots of mistakes along the way.

By maintaining a positive view, youths will be able to navigate through our lives’ ups and downs with strength and braveness. And we will also develop resilience and will become stronger from this.

Next, for us to have a positive view in life is for us to be grateful for what we have. Being grateful means that we acknowledge the positive aspects of our lives. We see the blessings around us, and we always feel grateful for them. The blessings that I mean are such as having a loving family, possessing our health, being able to live peacefully in our country and so on. 

Sometimes we are guilty of taking things for granted. This is for instance when we take for granted the food that we have on our plates. We take for granted the delicious food that we always have to eat everyday. We sometimes forget that there are people in this world who go about not knowing whether they will have anything to eat for that day. So I truly believe that we must always feel grateful for what we have to be happy.

When we are grateful for the things that we have in our lives, we will regularly express our gratitude and acknowledge these blessings. Always think about the unfortunate people who may not have even the basic needs in life such as safety, a roof over their head and clothes to wear. Therefore, when we regularly express our gratitude, we will focus on the positivity only and this will increase our overall happiness in life.

In conclusion, I believe that having a positive view in life is definitely one way to achieve happiness. Thank you.

Good morning to the examiners and fellow candidates. Today I would like to talk about having a healthy body as one way of achieving happiness in our lives. 

Having a healthy body is for sure an important aspect in our lives for us to be happy. Being healthy is not only restricted to physical health. This is because being healthy physically is also closely linked to our emotional health and mental health.

Having a healthy body is so important, especially for us young adults. Being young adults, we are only starting in our lives. We would have just started with a new job or new relationships. We also want to do all the activities that we like with friends. And so we would not want to be facing any trouble with our health that can stop us from pursuing what we want to do in life. So having a healthy body is very important to achieving happiness as this would allow us to pursue our dreams.

There are a number of ways for us young adults to achieve a healthy body and mind. To be physically healthy basically boils down to one thing. It is for us to take care of our body. To achieve a healthy body requires us to do a number of things. These are  such as consuming a balanced diet, doing regular exercise or being active and also having enough sleep.

Eating well involves consuming a nutritious diet that will nourish our bodies. What we eat will provide energy that we need to tackle our daily routine. We will need energy for us to go to work or to listen to lectures and get our college assignments done. 

Eating a healthy diet, such as taking fruits and vegetables will provide our body with the vitamins to fight off illnesses. And on top of that, taking lean proteins and whole grains like brown rice will support our optimum brain function. So basically eating well is very important for us to stay healthy especially for us as young adults and that will lead us to achieve happiness in our lives.

Another way of ensuring that we stay healthy is for us to remain active. Being active does not mean that we have to spend hours at the gym. Being active means that we are involving ourselves with physical activity. These are doing the activities that we love such as playing badminton with our brothers and sisters at home.

Doing regular exercise and staying active will release the hormone endorphins into our bodies. Endorphins as we know are very good and natural mood enhancers. This is the reason why we tend to feel happy and cheerful after doing any physical activities. When we do regular exercise, we will achieve a healthy body that will reduce stress and will lead to a more positive and joyful mindset.

This will then lead me to my third suggestion on how to achieve a healthy body, which is getting enough sleep. Getting enough sleep is very important to allow our bodies to recharge at night. 

Nighttime is meant for us to get our restful sleep. However, this does not normally happen especially for us young adults. Nighttime is sometimes used for us to finish our assignments or to continue playing games online until the wee hours of the morning. This is for sure not a healthy habit for us to have.

What we need to do is to prioritise getting enough sleep. Getting enough sleep will result in us having a healthy body as we allow our bodies to rejuvenate at night. When we sleep we will also rest our minds. That is why we normally feel fresh after a good night’s sleep. A well rested mind will be better and more alert to handle stress and make positive decisions during the day. Having a well rested mind will certainly lead us to have a healthy body.

In conclusion, I truly believe that one way of achieving happiness is for us to have a healthy body.

Sample question for candidate C:

Sample answer for candidate C:

Good morning everyone. There are many ways of achieving happiness in our lives. For me, I believe that having good relationships with other people will cause us to achieve happiness in our lives.

We humans are social creatures. There is a natural need in us to socialise and have a connection, with another human beings. As the saying goes no man is an Island. This is certainly true. We cannot live alone and survive in this world alone. We are interdependent with each other to survive in this world.

Having good relationships with others will certainly lead us to happiness in our lives. Youths like us naturally find that there is a great importance in social connections and relationships. This could be seen in our active use of social media in connecting us with our friends in the rest of the community.

There are several advantages of  having good relationships with other people. We are at the age where we are still in the period of significant growth. We are trying to understand the world around us and discovering our own identities. We will find it easier if we have good relationships with other people such as our parents, siblings and close friends who love us. This is because these are the people who we can rely on for support and advice. We can be sure that they will provide the support and advice that is best for us. These people who love us will have our best interest at heart. They will not want anything bad to happen to us and for sure will even go even further to making sure that we have a good and happy life.

Another advantage, if we have good relationships with other people is that they can provide us with emotional support that will lead us to gain happiness in our lives. When we have a good relationship with other people, they will care a lot about our emotional well-being. They will encourage our personal and emotional growth. We as youths may still be unsure of our career paths and also what course to take in university. When we have a good relationships with other people, they will help us and make sure that our choice will make us happy in the long run. This will certainly ensure that we achieve happiness in our lives.

There are a number of ways where we can foster good relationships with other people. The most important thing I believe, is to have good communication. Having good and effective communication is vital when we want to have successful relationships. Example to have our wants and needs, we should be able to communicate clearly for instance with our parents for them to understand us.

Next is for us to spend quality time with our loved ones. When we spend quality time with the people that we love such as our siblings and parents we are actually telling them that we value them. By spending quality time with each other, we will also learn more about one other and so become much closer. Doing activities together over the weekend, cooking together or going on short holidays together will do this. We will feel calm and contented being with our loved ones and because of this will cause us to achieve happiness.

In conclusion, I truly believe that having good relationships with other people will certainly cause us to have happiness in our lives.

Good morning to the examiners and fellow candidates. There are many ways for us to achieve happiness in our lives. For me, I believe that one way is for us to have a plan to develop ourselves.

When we develop our personal self, we are enhancing our knowledge, talents and capabilities. We always feel that we want to continuously improve ourselves. We also want to feel that we are a better human being, who has good attitude and behaviours and a human being that is better than who we were before. When we feel that we are continuously improving ourselves, no matter how small, we will feel satisfied with ourselves and this will lead us to achieve happiness.

There are a number of ways how we can plan to develop ourselves. Firstly, is for us to have moments where we involve in self-reflection. We could do this by spending time sitting by ourselves and reflecting on who we are as a person. These moments will allow us to develop as an adult exploring our interests, knowing our strengths and understanding our values. When we do some self-reflection on the different aspects of our lives, we will better understand ourselves, our passions and also our purpose in life. All this will lead us to take the next step that is setting goals for ourselves.

Developing ourselves will certainly lead us to gain happiness in our lives. When we want to develop ourselves, we will certainly create goals for us to achieve. It could be something small like choosing the colour of your headphones or something big that could be considered as a milestone in our lives, such as getting married. 

Having goals in our lives, will encourage us as youths to prioritise the important things. We will want to achieve these goals. And because of that we will work hard towards it, and in the process become better at the things that we do. So personal development will certainly allow us to achieve happiness. When we have goals, we will also provide ourselves with a sense of purpose and direction in our lives. And once we achieve the goals, we will then feel a sense of accomplishment and fulfilment. Because of this, we will be happy with ourselves.

In conclusion, I truly believe that having a plan to develop ourselves is one way for us to achieve happiness in our lives.
